Complete Vitae

Dr. Brad Vickers has a research interest in coaching expertise that relates to his experiences as a former swim coach of individual and team state champions as well as his interest in sport. His previous research includes interviews and observations of Bobby Bowden (the winningest coach in college football history), and Tommy Bowden along with email correspondence with the 12 head football coaches in the SEC to gain a greater understanding of their development toward expertise. A trip to Beijing, China for the Summer 2008 Olympic Games will initiate new research on the self-presentation strategies of Team USA's head swim coaches. Jack Bauerle (Women's head coach) and Eddie Reese (Men's head coach) will participate in a study that will allow us to gain insight into the identity formation, leadership characteristics, and subsequently the self-presentation strategies utilized by these expert coaches to most effectively coach the US swim teams. Further, Dr. Vickers has a basic interest in understanding the factors that increase coaching success in order to disseminate that information to future coaches.
