Maria is a first-year PhD student in the Exercise Science program at Mississippi State University, with a focus on Disability. Originally from Pakistan, she earned her Doctor of Physical Therapy degree from Riphah International University in Lahore and completed her Master's in Exercise Science at Mississippi State University in Spring 2024. Maria's research is dedicated to improving the mental and physical health of individuals with Down syndrome. Her Master's thesis involved developing a dance program called Active Pals for adults with Down syndrome, based on Self-Determination Theory, which emphasizes autonomy, competence, and relatedness. Her findings suggest that fulfilling these psychological needs encourages sustained physical activity among this population. At the Disability Research Lab, Maria aims to create effective and feasible interventions, with the long-term goal of expanding Active Pals throughout Mississippi to serve the community. She is passionate about becoming an expert in the behavioral science and psychological aspects of disability and physical activity.
